Koraput: In a remarkable surgical feat, doctors at Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput successfully removed a 15kg tumour from a 40-year-old woman’s abdomen.

The patient, a resident of Koraput district, had been suffering from severe abdominal pain for the last two years. After various tests, the tumour was detected, which had grown to 40x20x25 centimetres in size.

Dr. Sujata Swain, Head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, led the complex surgery. “The patient’s condition was critical, and any delay would have put her life at risk,” Dr. Swain said.

The surgery was performed by a team of experts, including Dr Swain, Dr Milan Sihna, Dr Prabhati Rani Mishra, and Dr Gopal Nayak.

“The woman was unaware that she was carrying a 15kg tumour in her abdomen. She had been suffering from unbearable pain for the last two years and visited the hospital for treatment. We were all astonished to see her condition. After examination, we advised her to undergo immediate surgery. Any delay would have put her life in grave danger. We then performed the complex surgery. It wasn’t an easy task for us. Even a slight negligence could have risked her life,” said Swain.

“The patient’s breathing was compromised due to the tumour’s size and location, which likely put pressure on her lungs, diaphragm, or airways, making it harder for her to breathe normally,” said Gopal Nayak, Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology.

“The successful surgery lasted several hours, and the patient is now recovering well in the ICU. This was a challenging surgery, but we are grateful for the successful outcome,” informed Swain.
