‘Mentally-Ill’ Women

Sundargarh: In a bizarre turn of event, two women,  seem to be mentally unstable, were found walking naked on the road over IB River Bridge in Sundargarh.

Onlookers, however, turned silent spectators even as the bizarre scene was sighted on the busy road.

Sundargarh MLA Kusum Tete who was on her way to a programme came to their rescue. She suddenly got down from her vehicle after seeing the cloth-less women walking around and immediately covered their bodies with a long towel which she received at a function as an honour.

Meanwhile, some social workers reached the spot and informed the nearest Astha Gruha (Mentally ill women’s home) officials over phone. Later, they took the two women to the Astha Gruha.

“It is so shameful that no one came to their rescue even though they were found walking in such a condition on a public road. I am so proud that the scarp I got as honour was used in the protection of the dignity of the helpless women,” Tete said.

The women are being treated at the Astha Gruha, secretary of the institute said.

“They seem to be mentally disturbed. We have called doctors for their treatment,” the secretary said.

Currently, 213 women are kept in the Astha Gruha. With the admission of these two, the number rose to 215. Many of the boarders have recovered fully, she said.
