Mercury Shoots Up To 43°C And Beyond At 12 Locations In Odisha, Titilagarh Hottest At 45°C

Bhubaneswar: Even as Odisha continues to singe under severe heatwave conditions, at least 26 places in the state recorded maximum temperatures (day temperatures) of 40°C or more on Sunday. According to the regional center of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar, Titilagarh was the hottest place in the state with a temperature of 45°C.

This aside, the mercury shot up to 43°C or more in at least 12 locations in Odisha today. The day temperatures in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack were 39.9°C and 38.5°C.

The state has been experiencing severe heatwave conditions starting from April 15. As of Sunday, Odisha has been reeling under an intense heatwave for 21 days. Bolangir, Nayagarh, Nuapada, Ganjam, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Boudh districts experienced the maximum summer heat today.

However, the weather office has forecasted that thunderstorms and rain accompanied by lightning are likely to bring down the mercury from Monday.

Weather warning for Odisha districts:

Day 1 (valid up to 0830 Hrs IST 06.05.2024):

Yellow warning: (Be updated) Heatwave conditions are very likely to prevail in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Boudh, Angul, Nayagarh, Nuapada, and Bolangir.

Day-2 (valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 06.05.2024 to 0830 Hrs IST 07.05.2024)

Yellow warning: (Be updated) Thunderstorms with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speeds reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Kandhamal.

Day-3 (valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 07.05.2024 to 0830 Hrs IST 08.05.2024)

Yellow warning: (Be updated) Thunderstorms with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places in Puri, Khorda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Cuttack, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kandhamal, and Kalahandi and also heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is likely to occur at one or two places in Ganjam, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, and Kandhamal. Thunderstorms with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speeds reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Angul, Koraput, and Rayagada.

Day-4 (valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 08.05.2024 to 0830 Hrs IST 09.05.2024)

Yellow warning: (Be updated) Thunderstorms with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Dhenkanal, and also heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) likely to occur at one or two places in Ganjam, Gajapati, and Kandhamal. Thunderstorms with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speeds reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Nawarangpur, Angul, Sundargarh, Deogarh, and Boudh.

Day-5 (valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 09.05.2024 to 0830 Hrs IST 10.05.2024)

Yellow warning:-(Be updated) Thunderstorms with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speeds reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.
