Jharsuguda: As many as 60 students of a school in Jharsuguda district reportedly fell sick after consuming rotten egg curry served in their mid-day meal on Saturday.

Students of Jamera UGME School in Jharsuguda complained of stomach pain and vomiting after eating the mid-day meal.  They were rushed to the nearby health centre and later shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital.

According to sources, 132 students were served egg curry and rice as part of the mid-day meal programme. The students claimed that the egg had a foul smell, but they were still served the meal.

The incident has sparked outrage among parents, who have demanded action against the school authorities.

The Block Resource Coordinator, Rabindra Sahu, said” Today the children were given rice and egg curry. When the children complained of stomach pain after consuming, I immediately instructed them to admit the ailing students to the nearby hospital. The children are currently undergoing treatment and are out of danger. The egg had a foul smell, but the inside was good, the children said. We are investigating the incident.”

Acknowledging the fault, the school chairman also that the egg curry was spoiled and should not have been served to the students. He suspected food poisoning and demanded a thorough investigation into the incident.

The students are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital and are out of danger. The incident has raised concerns about the quality of mid-day meals served in schools and the need for stricter monitoring of food safety standards.
