Bhubaneswar: Minor flood is anticipated in Mahanadi basin due to incessant rains in upper and lower catchment areas and the release of excess water from Hirakud Dam, said Bijaya Kumar Mishra, Engineer-in-Chief, Water Resources on Saturday.
Mishra said that presently 24 sluice gates of Hirakud dam have been opened. Around 6 lakh cusec of water will reach Mundali barrage by tomorrow. More gates will be opened if the rainfall continues in upper and lower catchment areas.
Only the water level of Baitarani river at Akhuapada and Jalaka river at Mathani is flowing above the danger level. If there is a need of releasing excess water from the Hirakud dam reservoir, it may lead to minor flooding, he added.
