Balasore: In a tragic incident on Monday, a 12-year-old girl drowned while retrieving paper boats from a pond in Mahalik Sahi of Padhuan village under Basudevpur police limits in Balasore district.

The minor girl was rushed to the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Soro.

However, she was declared dead by the attending doctors at the CHC.

Worth mentioning, on the occasion of Kartik Purnima today, people in the State observed ‘Boita Bandana’ by setting afloat miniature boats in water bodies commemorating the ancient maritime activities and trade relations of Odisha with Southeast Asian countries.

It was these paper boats that the minor girl was collecting when she met with her watery grave.
