Ganjam: In a horrific incident, unidentified miscreants allegedly killed and burnt two villagers of Mahuda under Digapahandi police limits in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Wednesday night. The miscreants also torched a two-wheeler belonging to one of the deceased.
The two victims have been identified as Litu Purohit and Siba Gouda. The burnt bodies of the victims were identified by their family members.
On being informed, Chikiti SDPO and Digapahandi IIC reached the spot where the bodies were found and sent them for post-mortem. The police have also launched an investigation into the horrific murders.
Meanwhile, Ganjam Superintendent of Police Dr Saravana Vivek M. told the media that early on Thursday morning police received information that two burnt bodies were lying in the bushes outside the village. “Soon, a team from Digapahandi police station reached the spot and seized the bodies.”
According to the SP, the deceased were anti-social elements and several cases are pending against both. The villagers were against them and did not want them to stay in the village. “We have detained around 15 persons from Mahuda village in connection with the crime and are currently interrogating them. We are confident that will be able to nab the culprits soon,” he said.
A preliminary probe suggests that the murders were a fall-out of an old enmity. However, deceased Litu Purohit’s younger brother Uma Shankar Purohit said that his brother did not have enmity with anyone. “My brother was working in Bhubaneswar some five-six years back, but was now unemployed.”
Villagers said that Litu was making a living by giving a family-owned tractor on rent.
