Bhubaneswar: Mission Shakti Self-Help Groups (SHGs) emerged as the highlight of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2025, held in Bhubaneswar, showcasing empowerment, creativity, and innovation.

Over 30 blocks from 16 districts of Odisha were represented, offering an impressive display of traditional craftsmanship and sustainable products through 41 meticulously curated stalls.

Visitors were captivated by the artistry of Kotpad sarees from Koraput, terracotta items from Nayagarh, and Cuttack’s renowned filigree work.

Other major attractions included Sabai grass crafts from Mayurbhanj and tribal ornaments from Nabarangpur. SHGs from Balasore displayed their traditional lac dolls and bangles, while groups from Boudh and Subarnapur highlighted Sambalpuri sarees.

Bamboo artifacts from Dhenkanal, brassware from Ganjam, and handloom articles from Khordha further enriched the exhibition.

Millet-based dishes and organic food products reflected the sustainable livelihoods of Mission Shakti members, underscoring their commitment to eco-friendly practices.

SHGs from aspirational districts like Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, and Rayagada, as well as members from Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), showcased their traditional handlooms, fine handicrafts, and organic produce, attracting significant attention from foreign visitors.

The exhibition provided SHGs a platform to interact with Indian-origin foreign delegates and international buyers, fostering connections that could pave the way for global market penetration. Delegates and tourists widely appreciated the intricate craftsmanship and the quality of products, reflecting Odisha’s rich cultural heritage.

In addition to the main venue, temporary stalls were set up across the city and its outskirts, drawing local residents and tourists to witness the state’s traditional artistry. The Mission Shakti stalls became a focal point, attracting over 22,000 visitors during the extended two-days of the exhibition.

The event highlighted the transformative power of women-led entrepreneurship, with SHG members earning over ₹31 lakh from product sales.

The collection of traditional wear, exquisite handicrafts, and organic produce mesmerized the audience and positioned the women as successful entrepreneurs and cultural ambassadors of Odisha.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi lauded the efforts of Mission Shakti members, emphasizing their role in preserving the state’s heritage and boosting economic progress.

The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2025 programme underscored the Odisha government’s commitment to empowering SHGs as key drivers of development, while fostering cultural preservation and international recognition.
