Baripada: A suspected burglar died and another sustained grievous injuries after they were brutally beaten by villagers in Dhanghera under Udala police limits in Mayurbhanj district late Tuesday night.

According to reports, the two accused—identified as Bapi Kohlar, also known as Bapi Bindhani, and Kahnu Madhei of Deula village—had allegedly broken into two houses in Dhanghera and stolen LPG cylinders. As they attempted to flee, local residents spotted them and raised an alarm.

The villagers chased down the pair, tied them up, and thrashed them severely. By the time police arrived, both had suffered critical injuries.

Udala police rescued the duo and rushed them to the Udala Community Health Centre for treatment. However, Bapi Bindhani succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The second accused, Kahnu Madhei, remains in serious condition and continues to receive medical care.

Police have registered a case and opened an investigation. Over 10 villagers suspected of participating in the assault have been detained for questioning.
