Jagatsinghpur: Tensions ran high in Charchika Bazaar locality of Jagatsinghpur district headquarters town on Friday after the death of a pregnant woman, allegedly due to medical negligence at a private nursing home.

According to reports, the deceased identified as Sasmita Sai, wife of Ranjit Swain from Tarada village, had been admitted to Shraddha Nursing Home for treatment when her condition deteriorated.

Following her death, grieving family members and outraged villagers accused the medical staff of negligence, claiming it directly led to her demise. The situation escalated as protesters placing Sasmita’s body in the nursing home premises, staged a sit-in demonstration demanding justice.

The protest quickly turned volatile. An angry mob vandalized property inside the nursing home, causing significant damage. They also blocked the Jagatsinghpur–Paradeep main road, bringing vehicular movement to a standstill and disrupting traffic in the region.

As tensions flared, police forces were deployed to the scene to maintain order.

In a tragic turn, Sasmita’s grief-stricken father reportedly attempted suicide with a knife at the protest site. However, police intervened in time and confiscated the weapon, though one police officer sustained injuries during the scuffle.

Protesters have demanded immediate arrest of the doctor involved and compensation for the victim’s family. Police have assured a thorough investigation into the incident.
