Bhubaneswar: A case has been registered against singer Sonali Nanda and her mother at Infocity Police Station in Bhubaneswar in connection with the death of aspiring model Soumya Ranjan Panigrahi.
The case was registered following the direction of the Orissa High Court. The mother-daughter duo has been booked under Sections 306 (Abetment of suicide) and 34 of IPC.
The Orissa High Court had in February directed the Commissionerate of Police to take action in connection with the death of Soumya, who had allegedly committed suicide on January 30 at his residence in the city over a failed love affair.
A suicide note, found in Soumya’s room after his death, mentioned that he resorted to the extreme step after being betrayed by his girlfriend Sonali.
In the note, Soumya also allowed donating his body organs post his death. Following the death of Soumyaranjan, some photographs of the couple and phone conversations with the girl and her mother made rounds on social media.
The family members of Soumya had lodged a complaint with the police. They later knocked on the doors of the Orissa High Court alleging inaction by police in the case. The High Court in its order had directed Bhubaneswar DCP to take action in this case within 3 weeks.
