Sundargarh: A menial labourer was charred to death after a heap of hot fly ash was dumped on him at the Modern Metals Factory in Chadrihariharpur in Odisha’s Sundargarh on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Bhagirath Hans (45) of Birmitrapur area.

According to reports, the accident occurred when Bhagirath was working in the fly ash disposal in the factory’s DI plant. While he was cleaning ash in the plant hot ash was dumped on him.

Other employees of the factory rushed him to the Ispat General Hospital (IGH) in a critical condition. Bhagirathi, who had sustained over 90% burn injuries, died during treatment.

Soon after this, Bhagirathi’s wife Saraswati Hans filed a written complaint at the Birmitrapur police station alleging that her husband lost his life due to lack of protective gears at work. The police have registered a case in this regard.

Raghunathpali MLA Durga Charan Tanti has expressed concern over the state of affairs in the factory and said that he would raise questions in the Assembly regarding worker safety in the factories. Himanshu Bal of Modern Metals Workers Union and State Secretary of BMS has also expressed concern saying that accidents are happening frequently in the factory due to the laxity of the safety system.
