Bhubaneswar: After scorching heat and unbearable temperatures, the southwest monsoon finally touched Odisha on Wednesday. The monsoon arrived ahead of schedule, making its presence felt in some parts of southern Odisha.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Odisha.
According to IMD, the southwest monsoon has covered the entire Malkangiri and Koraput districts, apart from some parts of Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Rayagada and Gajapati districts.
IMD scientist Umashankar Das took to his X handle to confirm the arrival of monsoon in Odisha. His tweet reads: “Southwest Monsoon winds have advanced into some areas of South Odisha today.”
Notably, the monsoon arrived in Odisha in May, which is earlier than the usual schedule. In the past, the monsoon had touched Odisha on May 28 in 1999, and May 25 in 2009.
Meanwhile, a well-marked low-pressure area has formed over the Northwest Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This system is likely to move slowly northwards and intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours.
Under the influence of this low-pressure system, Odisha is expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days. Thunderstorms and strong winds of up to 50-60 km/h are also predicted.
The weather department has issued an alert, advising people to remain cautious. The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) office has also directed all district collectors to be vigilant and take necessary precautions.
