Malkangiri: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday (July 26) dedicated the much-awaited Gurupriya Setu (bridge) to the people of the tribal-dominated and Maoist-affected district here in southern Odisha.

Aimed at bridging gaps for progress in Malkangiri, the most significant bridge will now connect 152 cut-off villages in 8 Gram Panchayats (GPs) of Malkangiri district.

It is also aimed that the inaugurated Gurupriya Setu will now transform lives in the 152 villages that had till date remained cut-off for over five decades.

While the length of the vital bridge is 910 metres, width is 8.4 metres and has been built at an estimated cost Rs 187.25 crores.

Initially the estimated cost was Rs 15 crores and later it got enhanced to Rs 172 crores and finally Rs 187.25 crores, sources said.

Notably, the 152 villages had been cut-off since 1940s while the Machhkund Dam Project was in 1960s followed by the Balimela Dam and Hydropower project.

In his reactions on the occasion, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said, “Gurupriya Setu is a new milestone of the history of Odisha Development. At the core of development is connectivity. Gurupriya Setu is a national pride and symbolises peace, cooperation and progress. It is a testimony to our commitment to integrate all parts of Odisha to mainland and thereby to prosperity. It is our dream come true as it is the bridge of progress.”

“While the construction began in 2014, it got completed in a record time of 4 years. It bears the testimony of our will power evincing Odisha can do it,” the CM averred.

Later the CM inaugurated the newly-built 7-storeyed and 300-bedded hospital on the premises of the District Headquarters Hospital here and also laid foundation stones for several other development projects. He also gave away benefits to the beneficiaries under different schemes.

Prior to the inauguration, the Chief Minister on the day tweeted:

Even though the foundation stone had been laid by the then Odisha Chief Minister late J.B. Patnaik in 1982, incumbent Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik once again laid its foundation stone and the bridge construction started in 2014. It has been built in record time of 4 years overcoming all hurdles and protests posed by the left wing extremists (LWEs) who have made Chitrakonda cut-off areas as their den.
