Angul: Police on Thursday arrested Tapaswini Sahu, the mother of the twins who were found dead on Wednesday inside a well in the backside of their house at Basala village (Mundadhipa Sahi) under Bantala police limits in Angul district.

Bantala police on January 17 received a written complaint from one Sunil Kumar Sahu of Basala village alleging that some unknown culprit had murdered his twin children- a boy and a girl by dumping them in a well in the backside of their house while the infants aged 3 months and seven days were sleeping in the house.

“With the help of scientific team we proceeded with the investigation. During the investigation we found that the accused is the mother of the deceased children,” informed Ramakanta Mahalik, SDPO, Angul briefing reporters on Thursday.

The SDPO said that the complainant had married her for the last ten years but they didn’t have a child for quite long time. The couple went for IVF and after that Tapaswini gave birth to twins— a baby girl and a baby boy. The kids were aged 3 months 7 days, he added.

“Over the last few days Tapaswini had developed mental illness and also had some health complications. Her family members had observed this over a few days. But the situation went for the worse yesterday. In the absence of family members she dumped the twins in the well leading to their death. Basing on prima facie evidence we have apprehended the accused mother and after completing the formalities will forward her to court,” the SDPO stated.
