Puri: In connection with the death of one K Ramesh allegedly under the custody of Baseli Sahi police, SP Akhilesvar Singh today said that his funeral was completed in the presence of family. The funeral pyre was lit by Ramesh’s father. “His family is safe and they will return home soon,” the SP said.
Multiple agencies are now probing into the incident in which Ramesh died allegedly in police custody. “A report in this matter has been sent to the National Human Rights Commission. The Deputy SP of Human Rights Protection Cell (HRPC) has also started an investigation. We have recommended a departmental enquiry in this case,” Singh added.
Tension gripped Puri following the death of Ramesh on Wednesday night. While the local residents are demanding a judicial probe into the incident, Puri police have denied having committed any excesses.
According to Singh, they received a tip-off that Ramesh possessed weapons and was planning a crime. Following this, a team of Baseli Sahi police tried to stop him but Ramesh attacked them. This led to a fist-off between the two parties.
In the scuffle, Ramesh sustained grievous injuries. Ramesh was then taken to the police station where he complained of ill health. Ramesh was declared dead at the district headquarter hospital.
Inspector General Personnel Praveen Kumar visited Puri on Thursday and met Singh and other senior officials. Kumar reviewed the developments in connection with the allegations levelled against police in this matter.
