Cuttack: Forest Department officials with the help of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) personnel and locals today recovered the carcass of the tusker that had got stranded in the swollen Mahanadi River near Mundali barrage from Satabatia.
According to reports, the carcass of the tusker that was found stuck at sluice gate no.24 of Jobra barrage on Sunday, upon opening of the sluice gate was swept away downstream by the current and had got stuck at the islet in the river near Satabatia in the evening.
Forest officials kept a watch over the carcass and today morning with the help ODRAF and locals have brought it to the bank of the river at Satabatia.
A post-mortem will be conducted on the elephant’s carcass.
An operation to rescue the elephant on Friday near the Mundali barrage had turned tragic killing Arindam Das, a journalist of a local television channel OTV and a jawan of the ODRAF after the inflatable dinghy in which they were aboard for rescuing the tusker capsized in the swirling waters of Mahanadi.
