Bhubaneswar: Panic gripped residents in some places of Bhadrak, Balasore and Sundargarh districts in Odisha after they heard a mysterious, booming sound around 11.30 am on Monday.
Many people in these areas rushed out of their homes as glass window panes started vibrating due to the baffling sound fearing it to be an earthquake.
While the origin of the mysterious sound is yet to be ascertained, some described it as a sonic boom emitted by low-flying jet planes.
It is worth mentioning here that people in Baripada in the Mayurbhanj district and Balasore district had a similar experience on February 27. Many had then thought that mining activities or the launch of missiles at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur might have been responsible for the booming sound, triggering speculation about a possible explosion or supersonic boom. However, nothing could be ascertained.
