Nabarangpur: A 20-year-old married woman from Nabarangpur, who was kidnapped, raped, and held captive in a locked room for several days, has been rescued from Maharashtra. A team of social workers, led by Kadambini Tripathi and Harabati Gond, rescued the woman from Gangapur, about 170 km from Nagpur.

The victim, a resident of Umerkot police station area in Nabarangpur district, was abducted on October 29 while on her way to a bank. The accused, 45-year-old Basudev Kahar from Tentuliguda village, lured her into a bus and took her to Nagpur via Raipur. He then locked her in a house in Gangapur village, Maharashtra, where he repeatedly raped her and forced her to engage in immoral activities.

The woman managed to escape on November 12, when the accused left the house. She walked 5 km to a roadside dhaba, where she narrated her ordeal to the owner and called her husband over phone. After her husband and family members informed the matter to Harabati Gond and social worker Kadambini Tripathi who informed the Umerkot police station.

A team led by Harabati rescued the woman with the cooperation of Umerkot police and Gangapur police. The woman was taken back to Odisha and handed over to Umerkot police station. The police have registered two cases, one based on the husband’s complaint (Case No. 397/24) and another based on the victim’s complaint. The investigation is ongoing.

The victim is currently staying at Harabati’s house after being kept at the Dabugan short-stay centre for a few days. Social workers Kadambini and Harabati are demanding the immediate arrest of the accused and a thorough investigation into the incident.
