Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s well-known weightlifter Ravi Kumar Katulu has been slapped with a four-year suspension by the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) for anti-doping rule violation.
Earlier in June 2019, he was provisionally suspended by the NADA. His sample that was collected during 71st Men and 34th Women Senior National Weightlifting Championship in Visakhapatnam earlier this year, had failed the dope test.
Hailing from Berhampur, Kumar has won gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games (69 kg category) and silver at the 2014 edition (77 kg category). He also won gold at the senior nationals.
He stressed that his hearing is still underway and the NADA is hearing out his side.
The presence of banned substance Ostarine in Ravi Kumar’s urine sample led to him getting banned. He stresses that he had no knowledge that is was an unapproved addition to his supplement and hence had taken it unknowingly. However, he urged young weight-lifters to keep a check on what they consume and a close watch on the banned drugs list.
Also banned for four years along with Kumar are Purnima Pandey who won a gold medal in weightlifting at 2016 Penang Junior Commonwealth Championship, discus thrower Dharam Raj Yadav who is a Federation Cup gold medallist, and Bhubaneswar National Open meet 100 m and 200 m champion sprinter Sanjit.
