**Bhubaneswar:** The Nandankanan Zoo and Botanical Garden located near the capital city, Bhubaneswar in the environs of the Chandaka forest, will remain open to visitors on 25-December 2017 and 1st January 2018, though both days fall on Monday.
Normally, the zoo remains closed on Monday but as both Christmas and New Year Day fall on Monday, they will remain open to visitors but it will remain closed on the following days 26th of December and 2nd of January, informed the Deputy Director of Nandankanan.
Established in 1960, this zoo was opened to the public in 1979 and became the first zoo in India to join World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) in 2009. It also contains a botanical garden and part of it has been declared a sanctuary.
The zoo is home to about 1660 individual animals representing 166 species, including 67 species of mammals, 81 species of birds, and 18 species of reptiles. It houses many endangered species of animals too.
