Bhubaneswar: Nandankanan Zoological Park on Monday conducted a mock drill to prepare for any emergencies arising from the possible impact of Cyclone ‘Montha’ on the south Odisha coast.
Zoo authorities said all necessary arrangements had been made to minimise damage to animal enclosures and ensure the safety of all animals. A 24×7 control room has been set up, headed by an Assistant Conservator of Forests and supervised by the Deputy Director, to maintain real-time coordination and communication. All range officers and frontline staff have been instructed to remain on-site until the cyclone passes.
Deputy Director Sanath Kumar said the safety of animals remains the top priority.
“Carnivores and sensitive species have been confined to night shelters, while bird enclosures have been secured with nets and wooden covers,” he said.
The zoo has also ensured uninterrupted power and water supply, emergency lighting, and sufficient fuel stocks for generators and vehicles. Teams have been deployed at strategic locations to monitor animal safety during the storm.
Authorities added that they would coordinate with police, fire services, and the energy department for immediate support if needed.
Officials urged the public to stay alert and follow government instructions as Cyclone Montha approaches the south Odisha coast.
