Bhubaneswar: Member of the National Commission for Safai Karmacharis (NCSK), Dr PP Vava today visited the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC). Vava attended a meeting organised by the BMC on utilisation of schemes and facilities available for Safai Karmacharis or sanitation workers.
Vava discussed about the schemes available for mainstreaming Safai karmacharis. He suggested full utilisation of the schemes to facilitate their development.
He held an interactive session with representatives of the sanitation workers. Housing is a basic need for all the Safai Karmacharis, they said and discussed pension issues and provision of uniform instead of money. Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Singh assured of resolving the issues in accordance with the existing rules.
Singh briefed Vava on steps taken for safety of the sanitation workers amid COVID-19 pandemic. The Corporation started vaccinating them on priority, and by now all the Safai Karmacharis in BMC have received double dose of the COVID vaccine, Singh apprised the NCSK Member.
“They have been taught Covid appropriate behaviour during field activities. They are also provided with the safety kits. During the pandemic our Safai Karmacahris have proved their mettle with uninterrupted sanitation service,” said Singh.
In Bhubaneswar, people from all walks have been vaccinated for COVID-19. As on date, more than 17 lakh doses of vaccine have been administered, the Municipal Commissioner added.
A presentation was screened about the strength of Safai Karmacahris by the Deputy Commissioner (Sanitation). In BMC, there are 409 regular, 176 DLR and 680 CLR category of Safai Karamacahris.
Besides, there are 2,648 workers engaged through service providers. Salary, pension and other benefits are given to regular categories whereas DLR, CLR and agency workers are given on minimum wage as per minimum wage prescribed under labour and ESI Department of the State Government.
The sanitation workers are given safety kits, identity cards and training on skill development. BMC has facilitated loans for Safai Karmacahris as well, the Corporation informed the Member, NCSK.
