Bhubaneswar: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Chief and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik has called for an inquiry into alleged discrepancies in electronic voting machines (EVMs) reported at a polling booth in Odisha. He reiterated his party’s preference for a return to ballot paper voting, questioning why the ruling BJP appears uneasy about the allegations.
“No one has directly accused the BJP, so their reaction raises suspicions. This matter warrants a thorough investigation,” Patnaik said when asked whether EVM tampering could have contributed to BJD’s defeat in the 2024 General Elections.
Marking 27 years of the BJD’s establishment, Patnaik expressed gratitude for the continued support and well-wishes from the people of Odisha. Addressing questions about his succession plan as the party celebrated its 28th Foundation Day, Patnaik said, “I plan to remain with the party for a long time and haven’t given thought to a successor yet.”
On the proposed ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill, Patnaik stated that the BJD is carefully evaluating the implications of the legislation.
Responding to speculation about him being nominated for the ‘Bharat Ratna,’ Patnaik dismissed the idea, saying, “I have no information about this. However, the BJD and many citizens of Odisha strongly support awarding the Bharat Ratna to the legendary leader Biju Patnaik.”
Patnaik also criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent remarks about Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, calling them “unfortunate.”
As political discussions intensify, Patnaik’s remarks underline the BJD’s position on critical issues, including election reforms and the legacy of Odisha’s iconic leaders.
