Following the deaths of four cracker blast victims at the SCB Medical College and Hospital here on Saturday, the death toll in the tragic cracker factory blast at Tanti Sahi under Itamati block of Nayagarh district rose to six on Saturday while undergoing treatment.

Two blast victims had died on Friday after the tragic incident.

While the charred body of one person identified as Arata Sahu was recovered from the spot, another person Debendra Muduli succumbed to his injuries at the SCB Hospital on Saturday evening itself.

Briefing media, SCB Medical Emergency Officer Dr Bhubanananda Maharana said, “On Friday night between 9.45-10.00 pm, we received 10 thermal burn patients from Nayagarh. While one was received dead, the 9 were initially administered first aid treatment. Now in the Plastic Surgery Ward 3 patients have been admitted and in the Surgery Ward, 6 were admitted. Out of the 6 admitted to the Surgery Ward, 3 have succumbed today. The 3 still undergoing treatment at the Surgery Ward, 2 have 100% burn injuries while another has 60% burn. The condition of the 3 is critical. Those 3 admitted to the Plastic Surgery Ward, one has 20%, one 40% and another 45% burn injuries. Although the condition of the two having sustained 40% and 45% burn injuries are stable now, but can’t predict the turn of event. Treatment is going on sincerely and freely. We’re trying our level best to render 100% treatment though there is allegation of laxity in this case of mass casualty”.

As many as 12 persons had sustained burn injuries in the incident.

Notably, the cracker factory caught fire around 5 PM yesterday followed by a massive blast.

The reason behind the explosion is yet to be ascertained. Police are investigating the matter.
