Bhubaneswar: An alarming 49.81 per cent of deaths of different road users due to road accidents in Odisha during 2021 are motorcyclists, informed Tukuni Sahu, Minister of Commerce & Transport in the State Assembly replying to a query from Gopalpur MLA Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy.
Similarly, 11.84 per cent of deaths of road users due to road accidents in the State are pedestrians, followed by 10.52 per cent car users, 8.48 per cent truckers, 3.50 per cent cyclists and 2.49 per cent bus users, Sahu elaborated based on data shared by the State Crime Branch.
Citing the Accident Year Book 2019 of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), she further informed that the 18-45 age group is most vulnerable to road accident deaths.
Quoting from a report by WHO, she told that the annual road accident death in India is around 1.5 lakh and in Odisha, it is around 5,000.
