Baripada: In a deeply distressing incident, a newborn baby girl was found abandoned on a roadside in Sanmauda village under Gorumahisani police station limits in Mayurbhanj district on Friday morning.
According to sources, villagers were alerted by the sound of a baby crying early in the morning and rushed to the spot. They found the infant lying on the roadside, with her body covered in red ant bites.
The villagers immediately rescued the newborn and took her to Gorumahisani Hospital for initial treatment. Considering her condition, she was later referred to the Rairangpur Sub-Divisional Hospital for further medical care.
Preliminary reports suggest that the infant may have been abandoned shortly after birth. Locals have alleged that the mother, possibly attempting to avoid social stigma, left the baby on the roadside. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding the identity or motive of those responsible.
Despite being left unattended overnight, the baby survived, and no attack by stray animals was reported.
Police are expected to initiate an investigation into the incident to trace the person responsible for abandoning the newborn.
The condition of the baby is currently under medical supervision.
