Balangir: In a disturbing incident, a newborn girl was found abandoned near a garbage dump in Dharabagarh village under the jurisdiction of the Badamal Police outpost of Saintala police station in Balangir district on Thursday.

According to sources, villagers noticed the infant lying near the village garbage dump and raised an alarm, following which local residents rushed to the spot and rescued the baby. The newborn was immediately shifted for medical care.

The rescued infant is currently undergoing treatment at the Saintala Community Health Centre (CHC). Officials from the Child Protection Unit have been informed and are closely monitoring the baby’s health condition.

Meanwhile, the police have launched an investigation to identify the person(s) responsible for abandoning the newborn and to ascertain the circumstances under which the baby was left near the garbage dump. Efforts are underway to trace the infant’s parents or guardians.

The incident has shocked local residents, who expressed concern over the recurring cases of abandonment of newborn girls in the district. However, no individual has so far come forward with any information or reaction related to the incident.
