Bhubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a report on the death of two workers engaged in cleaning the sewage tanks in Cuttack city of Odisha.
The workers died of asphyxiation on April 15, 2021. A complaint in this regard had been filed by a human rights activist Akhand of Pipili in Puri. The case was placed before the Commission on December 12, 2022.
Akhand stated that the incident occurred due to negligence by the Cuttack Municipal Corporation. He requested the Commission to intervene in the matter.
The Commission transmitted a copy of the complaint to the Principal Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Odisha; the Commissioner of Cuttack Municipal Corporation; and the Commissioner of Police, Cuttack calling for a report on the matter within four weeks.
The Commission stated that it will call for a personal appearance of the authority concerned for submission of the report, in case the report is not received within the stipulated time. The next hearing of the case is on January 9, 2023.
