Bhubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took cognisance of the recent death of a Nepali student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), expressing concern over the incident.
NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo disclosed on the social media platform X that a Nepali female student allegedly died by suicide on the KIIT campus yesterday.
Taking to her X account, she wrote: “Yesterday, another Nepali girl student of Odisha’s KIIT University committed suicide. In a similar incident last month, the NHRC investigated and issued its recommendations, pointing to procedural lapses in ensuring the safety of students. However, the University approached the Hon’ble Odisha High Court, and the Court stayed the recommendations of the Commission. We are taking cognizance of the recent incident.”
It is pertinent to mention that the rights body had previously investigated a similar case involving the death of a Nepali student at KIIT University, where students allegedly had to face the wrath of KIIT authorities for demanding justice for the deceased.
Though the Commission’s investigation highlighted procedural lapses in ensuring student safety and issued recommendations. However, the varsity authorities subsequently challenged these recommendations in the Orissa High Court.
