Bhubaneswar: Odisha Vigilance sleuths on Sunday caught Bijaya Kumar Bhanja, police ASI of Niali police station in Odisha’s Cuttack district, red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 from a complainant threatening to entangle his cousin in a case otherwise.
On Saturday, the ASI called the complainant and asked him to pay the demanded bribe amount. Finding no other way, the complainant reported the matter to the Vigilance authority. Accordingly, the Vigilance officials nabbed Bhanja on Sunday while accepting the bribe from the complainant.
The entire bribe money has been recovered from Bhanja and seized.
Following the trap, simultaneous searches are underway at two locations of Bhanja from a disproportionate assets (DA) angle.
A case has been registered against Bhanja at the Cuttack Vigilance police station under Sections 4/2024 of the 7 Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. Further investigation into the case is underway and a detailed report is expected.
