Bhubaneswar: Total nine persons have lost their lives due to heavy rains, flood and wall collapse in Odisha since June 1. Three persons in Kalahandi, two each in Kandhamal and Malkangiri and one each in Koraput and Nabarangpur have died in the past two and half months in the State.

According to the Water Resources Department, due to heavy rainfall in the lower catchments of river Mahanadi, about 11.5 lakh Cusec of flood water is likely to be discharged at Mundali on Wednesday between 6 am and 10 am.

"This is likely to cause Medium Flood in River Mahanadi and its distributaries. Hence, the Collectors have been instructed to take all necessary steps immediately to encounter the possible situation in their respective districts," a press note issued by the Revenue and Disaster Mangement Department stated.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik reviewed the prevailing situation and preparedness for the impending flood in River Mahanadi through video conferencing with the Collectors of the 13 districts (Bolangir, Boudh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Subarnapur, Nayagarh, Khordha, Cuttack, Angul, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada and Jajpur) on Tuesday.
