Bhubaneswar: Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling on Tuesday assured citizens that Odisha is fully prepared to handle any situation arising from Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections, emphasizing that no cases have been detected in Odisha so far.
“There is no need for people to get scared as no one has been affected by HMPV infection in the state so far,” Mahaling said while addressing reporters. He added that the health department is closely monitoring the situation and has implemented the guidelines and standard operating procedures issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to curb the spread of the virus.
Mahaling noted that HMPV cases have only been detected in three to four locations across India and that the situation is not serious. However, the state has already coordinated with medical colleges and special teams of doctors are ready to address any potential cases.
“Any situation arising out of HMPV will be jointly handled by the state and the Centre,” he said.
The Minister also urged residents to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as cough, cold, or fever, and reassured them that testing facilities are fully operational, despite the current absence of any cases in the state.
Earlier in the day, the Health Department held a high-level meeting at the Loka Seva Bhavan in Bhubaneswar, chaired by Health Secretary and attended by senior health officials, including the Director of Health Services and the Director of Public Health.
Public Health Director Dr. Nilakantha Mishra emphasized that the virus is not new and the state is well-equipped to manage the situation.
He highlighted that testing facilities, including those at AIIMS, are operational, and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is monitoring developments around the clock.
Dr Mishra further reassured the public, stating, “If necessary, the number of testing centers will be increased. However, the situation is not grave at present, even though some HMPV cases have been reported in the country. This is a seasonal virus, and there is no need to panic.”
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a common respiratory virus that typically causes upper respiratory infections resembling the common cold. It affects people of all ages, with its prevalence peaking during the winter and early spring months. The virus recently drew significant attention following an outbreak in China.
The Union Health Ministry has also addressed public concerns, confirming there has been no surge in HMPV cases within India.
In light of the rising cases in China, Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava chaired a virtual meeting with states and Union Territories on Monday to review the current situation of respiratory illnesses across the country and discuss preparedness measures.
Dr. Mishra also noted that the infections detected in India so far have not been linked to international travel and that affected states have already been issued necessary guidelines.
The Odisha government has assured citizens that it remains vigilant and proactive in ensuring public health safety amid emerging concerns about HMPV infections.
