Bhubaneswar: Odisha has registered 147 alleged sunstroke death cases so far. However, 30 cases out of the total registered cases have been confirmed.

Special Relief Commissioner Satyabrat Sahu has confirmed it through a release. The press release issued by SRC further mentioned that out of 147 alleged sunstroke death cases, 20 cases are not due to sunstroke and 97 cases are pending with the Collectors for inquiry.

“As cumulative, during this summer, 147 cases of alleged sunstroke death have been reported and 30 have been confirmed 20 cases are not due to sunstroke and 97 cases are pending with the Collectors for inquiry”, read the release issued by SRC.

Contrary to various reports circulating in the media about an alarming increase in heatwave-related deaths, SRC further confirmed that Odisha has registered six alleged sunstroke death cases in the last 24 hours out of which four cases have been confirmed.

“As on 02.06.2024, total 41 alleged sunstroke death cases have been reported by the collectors out of which 26 cases are confirmed due to sunstroke and 8 cases are not due to sunstroke”, read the release further.

In the wake of rising temperature accompanied by unbearable heatwave conditions, the SRC has asked the district collectors to ensure post-mortem examination of every suspected sunstroke death for sanction of ex-gratia.

Besides, a joint inquiry by the local revenue officer (tehsildar) and the medical officer is mandatory to ascertain the exact cause of each death.
