Bhubaneswar: Even as the State heaved a sigh of relief from the scorching heat due to nor’wester rain, the twin city Cuttack-Bhubaneswar was pounded by the rain and lightning which caused low-lying areas waterlogged on Saturday mid-night.
Suddenly, thunderstorms and heavy rain occurred at around 11.30 pm on Saturday which lasted for around an hour. The rain was accompanied by strong wind, which disrupted traffic on several roads including the NH 16 passing through the twin city.
The low-lying lanes in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar were waterlogged due to incessant rain. In some places, rain water entered the houses giving families sleepless nights.
Bhubaneswar has recorded a maximum 76.8 mm of rain, which is the season’s highest, weather scientist Umashankar Dash stated through ‘X’.
Some other places of coastal Odisha also received rain under the influence of nor’wester. Paradip reported 51.4mm of rainfall while, 37.8mm in Puri, 35mm in Balasore and 32mm in Chandbali.
On the other hand, the weather department has issued a warning rain and thunderstorms till May 15. The Met department has issued yellow alert for heavy rain and lightning in four districts – Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak and Jajpur today.
