Notorious Criminal Held For Extortion In Cuttack

Cuttack: Commissionerate Police on Sunday arrested a notorious criminal Sk Gulzar Ahmed (34) on various charges including extortion, criminal intimidation and possession of arms.

Reportedly, Gulzar and his associates used to extort money from the students of Christ College by threatening and attacking them.

Yesterday, one Abhijit Das had lodged a complaint at Cantonment Police Station here against Gulzar and his associates that they had attacked him when he denied paying them extortion money for New Year celebrations.

As per the complaint, Gulzar and his associates had attacked Abhijit on the Barabati Stadium road and had terrorized passersby at gunpoint because of which shop keepers had pulled down the shutters and public deserted the place.

Based on prima-facie evidence, raids were conducted at probable hideouts of Gulzar and he was arrested. A double barrel pistol used in the crime and a live bullet was also seized from his possession.

In the same context, a woman identified as Geetanjali Panda (40) was arrested for abusing Constable Jyotirmayee Panda over phone.

Jyotirmayee was on duty at the Reception of DCP Cuttack office when she received a call from the woman identifying herself as daughter-in-law of Ex-MP of Kathagadasahi Akshay Panda.

The caller abused the constable and threatened to not produce the boys of Christ College, who had been to meet the DCP to ventilate their grievance demanding arrest of Gulzar.

Further, based on a case registered at Bidanasi Police Station, three other persons, Sahil Parbez, Sk Imran Ahmed and Amarjit Behera, were arrested for threatening Prasanjit Das, the brother of Abhijit, to withdraw the case and comprise with Gulzar.
