Kuchinda (Sambalpur): Even as families across Sambalpur district were celebrating the Nuakhai festival, Charbhati village under Kuchinda police station was plunged into grief after a shocking case of patricide.
A 23-year-old youth, identified as Bibardhan Raksa, allegedly beat his 70-year-old father, Krupa Sindhu Raksa, to death on Thursday.
According to police, Bibardhan returned home in an inebriated state and demanded money from his father. When Krupa Sindhu refused, a heated argument broke out. In a fit of rage, Bibardhan allegedly pushed his father to the ground and repeatedly struck him on the head and body with a wooden log, killing him on the spot.
The victim’s daughter, Nirmita, witnessed the incident and alerted neighbours and Kuchinda police. A police team led by IIC Bamideb Shankhual reached the scene, seized the body, and sent it to Kuchinda Sub Divisional Hospital for post-mortem. A scientific team from Sambalpur also collected evidence from the site.
Police said the accused initially sat beside his father’s body for some time before fleeing the scene upon hearing that police were on their way. Following raids at multiple locations, he was later arrested.
The incident has left Charbhati villagers in shock. Many residents blamed rising alcohol abuse and gambling in the area for the tragedy.
A case of murder has been registered at Kuchinda police station, and further investigation is underway.
