Bhubaneswar: The vibrant grounds of Star International School were transformed into a spectacular hub of culture and devotion as Odisha Samaj UAE hosted the 15th edition of its annual Rath Yatra, a cherished tradition that has blossomed into one of the Gulf’s most significant cultural and spiritual events for the Odia community.
More than 1,000 devotees from across all seven emirates, along with members of diverse Indian communities, gathered to pay homage to Lord Jagannath and His divine siblings, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra.
The festivities commenced at 7 am with the Surya Puja, followed by traditional rituals and the ceremonial Pahandi Bije, where the deities were elegantly escorted to the grand chariot by 11.30 am. Over 100 Odia families collaboratively prepared Chhappan Bhoga—a set of 56 traditional delicacies—offered at noon in accordance with Puri’s age-old customs.
Children in classical attire captivated the audience with the Devadasi dance, while devotees chanted the 108 Mahamantras, filling the air with spiritual energy. The much-anticipated moment arrived at 12.30 pm as the chariot was pulled with heartfelt enthusiasm. Satish Kumar Sivan, Consul General of India to Dubai, joined the devotees in this sacred act, symbolising the event’s spirit of multicultural unity.
Following the procession, Mahaprasad was distributed, fostering a communal spirit of equality and gratitude.
The celebrations continued into the evening with non-stop Sankirtan, Bhajan Sandhya, and a mesmerising Odissi dance performance, maintaining the event’s divine ambiance well after sunset.
Amiya Mishra, President of Odisha Samaj UAE, remarked, “This festival is our emotional bridge to home and heritage. For 15 years, we have recreated a piece of Odisha in the heart of the UAE and will continue to do so for the Odia community’s greater good.”
Over the years, the Rath Yatra has evolved into a unifying platform, welcoming people of all backgrounds to share in devotion, culture, and community pride.
