Bhubaneswar: An Odia entrepreneur plans to revolutionise daily transport in the country with the introduction of electric cycle, the first among a range of products planned to be released in a phased manner by his start-up R Innovation Lab.
A native of Bhanjanagar, Rupaj Kumar Panda, is the mind behind the electric cycle RIL 100, which is being showcased in the Odisha MSME International Trade Fair 2020 that kicked off at the IDCO Exhibition Ground here from January 8.
Talking to OMMCOM NEWS, Panda informed that the idea behind the e-cycle was nurtured six months back keeping in view the rise in air-pollution and hike in fuel prices.
“Electric vehicles have already been introduced in foreign countries such as United States, Australia and China to check pollution. As it is still to capture the Indian market, we decided to venture into it,” he added.
Presently Panda’s start-up has launched two models of the e-cycle. One can run up to 40 km on a 3 hr charge and the other can run up to 20 km on a 2 hr charge. The RIL 100 is fitted with a 250w motor and 10 Ah battery.
While people can also pedal to their destination if the battery gives up, the start-up also provides an extra back-up battery which can be replaced with the used one. The e-cycles are available in Bhubaneswar market at a price range of Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 as the price range varies with the capacity of the battery.
Panda claims that the e-cycle can run up to 40 km at a charge of Rs 2. One can recover the purchase cost of the e-cycle within two years. In future, he has planned to launch a range of e-cycles for school children and ladies and also venture into electric bikes.
He further informed that his start-up has already partnered with ITI Bhubaneswar to train the students and start manufacturing the products in the State capital.
