New Delhi: The Central government has granted a six-month extension to noted physicist Ajit Kumar Mohanty as Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).
According to a Personnel Ministry order dated August 27, Mohanty’s services have been extended for six months with effect from October 11, 2025.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension, relaxing the provisions of Fundamental Rule 56 (d). This rule allows for extension of service to secretaries of the Department of Space and the Department of Atomic Energy up to a maximum age of 66 years.
Mohanty, an Odisha-born physicist, was appointed as AEC Chairman and DAE Secretary in April 2023. He has had a distinguished career, serving as Director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, and Physics Group, BARC. He has also been associated with CERN as a Scientific Associate twice and has held key positions in the Indian Physics Association.
