Bargarh: In a tragic incident, a 40-year-old woman migrant worker from Odisha died in a crane collapse at a brick kiln in Telangana.
The victim, identified as Hira Munda of Nagempali village under Bargarh Town Police limits, had gone to work at the KBC Bricks unit in Karimnagar district of Telangana to support her family.
The fatal accident occurred when the crane Hira was operating suddenly snapped, crushing her to death. A case has been registered at Kothapalli Police Station in Telangana regarding the incident.
The concerned contractor arranged for an ambulance to transport Hira’s mortal remains back to her native village, where grieving family members and neighbours received the body amidst wails and despair.
Hira, a mother of young children, had joined her husband Durga Munda at the worksite to earn daily wages through backbreaking labour.
The tragedy has cast a pall of gloom over Nagempali village, with the deceased’s impoverished family now appealing for government assistance. “We barely managed two meals a day. Now with Hira gone, we don’t know how we’ll survive,” said a relative, highlighting the precarious existence of migrant workers.
The incident underscores the dangerous working conditions faced by thousands of Odisha’s seasonal migrants who travel to other states for livelihood. Local authorities in Bargarh are yet to comment on possible compensation or support for the bereaved family.
