Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate of Police have launched a programme named APOSSA to promote sports among slum children.

APOSSA or All Round Promotion of Sports in Sums and Young Juveniles against Narcotics Abuse) was launched by Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, Asit Tripathy in the presence of Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty.

On the occasion Mohanty said that the programme would aim at promoting volleyball, basketball and other sporting activities in the slums.

This would be an effort build good relations and trust between the police and slum youths. They would be counselled to abstain from drug and narcotics abuse and focus on constructive activities, said Mohanty.

DCP Anup Sahoo said that the police would regularly visit the slums to bridge the gap between the slum dwellers and the police. The drug peddlers find safe havens in the slums and the inhabitants can act as vital sources for intelligence gathering, he said.
