Bhubaneswar: Odisha Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy has convened an all-party meeting in the wake of the ruckus created by the opposition BJD and Congress members in the House on Tuesday demanding reservations for SCs, STs and OBCs in the field of education.
During the question hour, members from opposition BJD, Congress, and CPI(M) gathered in the Well of the House demanding reservation for the ST, SC and OBC communities. They disrupted the session shouting slogans in support of a caste-based census.
As a result, the House faced multiple adjournments during the question and zero hours. The situation de-escalated after Speaker Surama Padhy convened an all-party meeting. While the opposition participated in the proceedings, Congress called for a statement from the Chief Minister regarding the reservation issue.
After the question hour on Tuesday, opposition BJD and Congress MLAs created ruckus in the House demanding a caste census. Legislators of both parties invaded the Well of the House over the issue. As the situation became uncontrollable, Speaker Surma Padhi adjourned the proceedings of the House till 11.30 am.
Amidst the uproar, Congress MLA Tara Bahinipati and BJD MLA Adhiraj Panigarahi attempted to ascend to the podium, while BJD MLA Romanch Ranjan Biswal was observed chanting slogans atop the reporter’s table prompting the Speaker postponed the session until 12:30 and scheduled an all-party meeting to restore order.
