Bhubaneswar: Odisha is emerging as a frontrunner in India’s clean energy revolution, making rapid progress toward energy independence through aggressive adoption of renewable energy and sustainability initiatives.
With an installed power generation capacity exceeding 9,000 MW, the state is now officially power-surplus and well on course to meet its ambitious green energy transition goals.
At the heart of this transformation is the Odisha Renewable Energy Policy 2022, which targets the creation of 10,000 MW of renewable energy (RE) capacity by 2030. In a significant leap, 49 renewable energy projects have already been approved within just one year of the policy’s implementation — a testament to the state government’s proactive push for clean energy adoption.
This momentum is further strengthened by flagship Central schemes like Saubhagya (Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana) and PM-KUSUM (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan), through which the state is bringing power to remote areas, supporting farmers with solar-powered pumps, and enhancing rural livelihoods through energy access.
Experts and officials suggest Odisha’s clean energy success is not just about surplus power generation, but about creating a resilient, decentralized, and sustainable energy ecosystem that uplifts rural communities and reduces dependence on fossil fuels.
With a strategic blend of large-scale solar parks, decentralized solar for agriculture, and robust transmission infrastructure, Odisha is setting a national example for balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.
