**Puri/Bhubaneswar: ** Following the bird flu scare in Krushnaprasad block and some of the samples found tested positive from Bhopal-based National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) evincing the carcass affected with avian influenza virus, Puri district administration launched culling and deep burial of the poultry birds in the block yesterday and also continued today.
The administration also sanitized the poultry farms as well as the affected villages with bleaching powder and is maintaining a strict vigil.
Speaking to media, Puri Collector Jyoti Prakash Das informed, “The samples from two villages sent for test have been received positive from Bhopal. Yesterday meeting was held as per the SOP (standard operating procedure). CDVO has already formed 10 surveillance teams, five teams have started culling.”
He added, “As per norms, all poultry birds in the affected epicenter within 1-5 km of radius will be culled and made deep burial. In the affected areas, ban has been imposed on consumption of poultry flesh and egg. All the MDM (mid day meal) and Anganwadi centres have been debarred from its consumption. Surveillance teams are on alert to check movement of poultry from there nor import.”
The Puri Collector further informed, “Maluda also comes under the 10 km radius. Similarly, sale of birds, sale of poultry and eggs banned. 5 teams of CDVO will be engaged in culling operation, 3 teams deployed for surveillance and two teams on reserve. Miking is being done for public awareness there. Nothing to panic, situation is absolutely under control. All precautions have already been taken.”
In his media reaction at Bhubaneswar, Odisha Animal Resources Development Minister Pradeep Maharathy, “Bird flu has been detected in Krushnaprasad. Also report has been received from Puri city about the death of crow. Expert team has rushed to Krushnaprasad to take stock of the situation. As report has been received positive from laboratory test, all birds in the periphery of Krushnaprasad block will be culled and made deep burial as well as the areas sanitized.”
“State Government is on alert to avert spread of this bird flu to other blocks. Still, samples have been collected from the periphery blocks like Kanas, Puri Sadar and Brahmagiri and will be sent for test. Compensation to the poultry firm owners will be paid as per the existing norms,” stated the Minister.
