Bhubaneswar: Former Bari MLA and Odisha BJP leader Debasis Nayak has announced that he will contest the upcoming Assembly elections in the state as an Independent candidate from the Bari constituency in Jajpur district.
After the BJP announced its fifth list of MLA candidates on Thursday, Nayak made this announcement on his social media handle. The BJP has nominated Umesh Jena for the Bari constituency. According to reports, dissatisfied over not being made the party candidate from Bari, Nayak has decided to quit the saffron party and contest the elections as an Independent.
Debasis Nayak wrote on his social media handle, “I have decided to contest the Assembly elections from Bari as an Independent candidate. People of Bari are my strength and I want to serve them.”
Nayak won from Bari Assembly seat in 2009 and 2014 elections on the BJD ticket. In 2019, the BJD nominated Sunanda Das for this seat. As Dekshisha did not get the ticket, he left the party and joined the BJP. He expected that the BJP would field him from the Bari seat. However, Nayak was left disappointed as the party chose Umesh Jena for the seat.
