Bhubaneswar: The Bharatiya Janata Party is observing ‘Black Day’ nationwide today as a remembrance of the ‘Emergency’ declaration by former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975.

In a press meeting, the BJP’s State vice-president Biranchi Tripathy said, “The Bharatiya Janata Party will observe ‘Black Day’ at the district level by organising intellectuals meet, press meets, listening experiences of the victims, and honouring individuals who fought against of the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA)”.

“The ‘Black Day’ will be observed at the district level in the State and all districts nationwide, making people aware of the outcome of the Emergency declaration in the nation,” Tripathy said.

Coming down heavily on Congress, Tripathy said, “The party which is advocating on democracy is the one which has murdered the essence of it.”

Adding on, he said, “In 1971, Indira Gandhi, then serving as Prime Minister of India, made unethical use of government mechanism to win elections against her opponent Raj Narain, which was later proven in the court of law followed by a case filed by Narain. In the fear of losing power and not being re-elected as the Prime Minister of India, declared an emergency in the nation.”

Gandhi arbitrarily declared an emergency without consulting with anyone to satisfy her self-interest and retain power as Prime Minister of India. Tripathy said.

“Bharatiya Janata Party as a responsible political organisation has taken the responsibility to make people of the entire nation aware about the dark side of the emergency declaration as a measure to avoid such anti-constitutional activities in the future.”
