Bhubaneswar: Amidst rumours of an impending cyclone, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has clarified that there is no threat of a cyclone or depression forming over the Bay of Bengal in the near future.
According to IMD Director General, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, a new low-pressure system may form over the Bay of Bengal around September 20. However, it is unlikely to intensify into a cyclone. The current low-pressure system, which has been causing rainfall in various parts of Odisha, has now shifted to Telangana and Vidarbha. As a result, the rainfall intensity is expected to decrease gradually.
He further stated that the monsoon is unlikely to withdraw from Odisha at this stage.
Meanwhile, the IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall in some areas of coastal and interior Odisha on Monday and Tuesday. However, there is no forecast of heavy rainfall in any part of the state.
The IMD DG clarified that there is no likelihood of a cyclone or depression forming during the upcoming Puja festivities. He urged people not to believe in rumors and to rely on official updates from the IMD.
