Bhubaneswar: Following a fire incident at the Priyadarshini Market Complex on Friday, Odisha Chief Secretary Anu Garg chaired a high-level review meeting and directed departments to strengthen fire safety preparedness across the state.
The meeting, held at Lok Seva Bhawan, was attended by senior officials including Additional Chief Secretary Hemant Sharma, Director General of Fire Services Sudhanshu Sarangi, Additional Chief Secretaries Usha Padhi and Vishal Kumar Dev, and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation Commissioner Chanchal Rana, among others.
Reviewing the state’s fire safety preparedness and emergency response mechanisms, Garg directed departments to launch an extensive Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaign to enhance public awareness and ensure regular inspection of fire safety systems.
Commercial establishments, housing societies and large buildings have been asked to maintain valid fire safety certificates. Institutions have also been instructed to appoint fire supervisors from within their workforce, who will be trained by Fire Services personnel.
The Chief Secretary emphasised the need for periodic inspection of electrical systems in buildings, noting that fire incidents pose serious risks to life and property. She urged citizens to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to safety norms.
During the meeting, Sarangi highlighted key suggestions and appealed to the public to use the 112 emergency helpline for immediate assistance in case of fire or other emergencies. The toll-free number provides integrated support for police, fire and medical services.
Authorities will intensify awareness campaigns through television, radio and social media, while Civil Defence volunteers will be engaged in outreach programmes.
The Fire Services, Housing and Urban Development, and Energy departments have been directed to prepare a coordinated Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and scale up awareness initiatives.
In view of the upcoming Rath Yatra, special fire safety inspection drives will be conducted in hotels and crowded areas in Puri.
