Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today announced to institute ‘Manoj Das International Literary Award’ in memory of legendary litterateur Padma Bhushan awardee Manoj Das.
A token amount of Rs 10 lakh will be awarded every year to Odia litterateurs who excel in English writing, said a press release issued from the CM’s office.
Similarly, in order to infuse interest among the youth towards English and Odia literature ‘Manoj-Kishore Sahitya Samman’ will be awarded for original writings at the high school level every year. One prize each for writings in English and Odia will be given each year. The prize money will be Rs one lakh.
Besides, following a proposal from the family members of Manoj Das, the State government will take over the ancestral home of the famous writer at Sankhari village in Balasore district and establish a memorial in the name of the famous siblings- Prof Manmath Das and Manoj Das as ‘Manmath-Manoj Smaraki’.
The memorial will house a library that will have all books on history and literature authored by Manmath and Manoj.
The temple in the premises of the ancestral house will be also conserved.
In addition to these, special editions of Utkala Prasanga, Odisha Review and Konark magazine brought out by Odisha Sahitya Akademi will be published in memory of Manoj Das.
It may be mentioned here that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had spoken to the family members of Manoj Das following the latter’s demise over the phone and while extending his sympathies on the demise of great litterateur had discussed with them the proposal over the establishment of the memorial.
